Derive Technologies, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise Platinum Partner (inclusive of our dedicated Derive Healthcare practice), has been collaborating with the HPE Synergy team to produce education events surrounding the complete Composable Infrastructure solution for the New Data Center. HPE Synergy is a "powerful software-defined solution that lets you manage your infrastructure as code, deploying IT resources quickly and for any workload. Through a single interface, you can compose fluid pools of physical and virtual compute, storage, and fabric resources into any configuration for any application."

Derive is currently helping clients in Healthcare and other industries to utilize this important Composable Infrastructure solution to enable business IT to go, "beyond the role of internal service broker to offer new applications that elevate and enhance the business."  One of Derive's events is taking place today, in Manhattan, NYC, wherein clients will be exposed to the full breadth of the collaborative HPE Synergy and Derive offering, including powerful, cost-effective procurement, implementation and ongoing support services from Derive's HPE Synergy-certified professional services team.

An article by guest bloggers, by Taha Tungekar, HPE and writer and technologist, Eric J. Bruno, entitled, "Composable Infrastructure for New Data Center Technology Practices", appeared last week on HPE's website. The article provides important insights into HPE Synergy, as true Composable Infrastructure, a "true innovation" according to the article, that, "goes beyond hardware, and includes everything that goes into a cloud deployment—including servers, storage, fabric, security, management software and more."

For those attending today's event in New York, Tungekar's and Bruno's article is a great read to bolster the information delivered in the presentation. For those who were unable to attend the event, or are otherwise interested in HPE Synergy, it's a great primer on the benefits of the solution for Line of Business (LOB) owners, with interactive graphics that "move you through" the unified, simplified approach to IT infrastructure. We have reproduced the complete article below.

Composable Infrastructure for New Data Center Technology Practices

Guest Blog post by Taha Tungekar, HPE & Eric J. Bruno, TBT

Composable Infrastructure may sound like just a brilliant marketing phrase, but for enterprises using HPE Synergy, it’s a true innovation. Synergy goes beyond hardware, and includes everything that goes into a cloud deployment—including servers, storage, fabric, security, management software and more. Going even further, Synergy’s Unified API makes it all programmable. As a result, you can quickly compose your infrastructure to meet today’s needs, then recompose it just as quickly as those needs change.

In addition to composability, the Synergy platform is versatile enough to run traditional data center workloads alongside cloud-native applications. The result is a fluid set of resource pools that you can use (and reuse) to run all of your applications together, whether it’s SAP HANA, VMware, ERP systems, or custom applications and services.

Expressing Infrastructure as Code

Merging decades of experience in traditional infrastructure with modern software-defined networking and cloud architecture, HPE Synergy offers a complete infrastructure-as-code solution. HPE’s focus on integration enables infrastructure composition in a way that satisfies both line of business (LOB) owners and IT.

For LOB owners, the biggest need is agility. Synergy allows you to deploy an application or cloud workload to meet business needs as quickly as they arise. Having the right technology is core to business success, because the advantage goes to those who deploy at a pace faster than the competition. Synergy gives you this advantage, providing fluid pools of resources that LOB owners can work with to compose new solutions themselves within minutes.

No one in IT wants to be a bottleneck, and no one wants to work nights and weekends to deploy infrastructure. Instead, HPE Synergy helps IT keep pace with business requirements by allowing application teams and developers to use what they’re comfortable with: code. Synergy offers a unified API to deploy and integrate infrastructure, workloads and applications. This includes all of the layers and components of an enterprise solution including firewalls, networking, storage, legacy software, third-party components, and more, assembled into seamless solutions instead of silos.

Like A Coin, Technology has Two Sides

Technology enables business, but business issues (non-stop market, customer, and enterprise demands) drive technology decisions. Accurately meeting business demands requires a holistic infrastructure solution that can be changed quickly. Bending non-optimal, outdated solutions to meet tomorrow’s needs results in greater effort and risk.

In terms of technology, Synergy caters to a wider range of application requirements than past infrastructure solutions, all in a software-defined form. Developers value the ability to mix workloads and application types in one platform, while deploying infrastructure as code to compose and recompose at will. Synergy enables developers to provision virtual compute, storage, and containers—even bare-metal servers—and then deploy images onto them with a single unified API.

To meet business demands, Synergy’s agility is a big win. Whether you need an environment for a legacy solution today, or a big data or memory-intensive compute workload tomorrow, Synergy is flexible enough to be reconfigured at will. This eliminates the need for dedicated hardware purchases (i.e. in-memory SAP HANA, Hadoop, or Databases), so you don’t have to spend or commit budget for each new service.

With Synergy, HPE Gets Personal

With Synergy, HPE has considered far more than data center hardware and infrastructure. Traditionally, the roles of developers and IT staff were often contradictory: developers viewed IT staff as slow and constraining; and IT viewed developers as demanding and short-sighted. Likewise, IT administrators focused on server environments (hardware and OS) while developers focused on applications.

The focus of Synergy is on people, processes, and technology that work together, which is something IDC noted as key to business efficiency.

People: In the past, managing data center infrastructure—including deployments, upgrades, and decommissioning—was a chore. Likewise, management and administration was done in silos. To address this, HPE Synergy offers a single management application for compute, storage, and fabric components. This unified approach allows staff with different roles to have the same view of what’s happening, which promotes collaboration, greater efficiency and fewer mistakes.

Processes: In the past, it was common for traditional infrastructure procurement and deployment processes to take months to complete. Worse yet, they were often done in silos, with individual groups in charge of parts of the solution, and were fraught with risk. HPE Synergy removes the silos, and allows your in-house experts to work together without complex processes, simplifying the procurement process, and eliminating the risk of components not working together. Instead, you compose solutions efficiently using built-in automation.

Technology: HPE Synergy offers a full solution stack with an API that integrates with your existing software, open source packages (e.g. Chef and Puppet) and other tools to deploy and reconfigure infrastructure as a code. Whether it’s a cloud-native workload or a legacy application, Synergy runs them side-by-side in the same environment. Further, Synergy builds intelligence into the platform, allowing for software updates and infrastructure tuning to occur without downtime. This not only reduces complexity, it lowers risk and eliminates duplicated time and effort.

Conclusion: Synergy Enables True Digital Transformation

When it comes to digital transformation, the challenge is supporting the legacy applications that run your business; you can’t just turn them off. HPE knows that IT transformation is a journey. HPE Synergy supports your existing core applications along with newer cloud-native workloads, allowing you to enhance them at your own pace.

With Synergy, you go from idea to market in an instant, while securely and reliably running all the applications your business relies on. The result is a unified and re-composable infrastructure that keeps legacy applications stable while other parts of your business remain agile. Synergy truly brings IT staff and developers together with a common set of tools, a complete and modern infrastructure, and a unified interface that serves your entire organization. With it, everyone looks at a single, fluid pool of resources to make strategic business and technology decisions together.
