April 5, 2018 -- An important article in the March 31, edition of Modern Healthcare, by author, Rachel Z. Arndt, was entitled, "Building the best HIPAA contingency plan." According to Arndt, "As the plague of cyberattacks on health systems continues, HHS' Office for Civil Rights wants healthcare organizations to establish contingency plans to keep patient data secure. In fact, the HIPAA security rule mandates that covered entities and business associates have such plans."

The article went on to describe that OCR is urging "healthcare organizations to figure out which IT systems are critical, to understand how to function in a disaster, and to back up protected health information so it can be retrieved if the original data are lost or taken offline."

The HIPAA contingency plan recommended by experts polled by Modern Healthcare can be found in the article on the website, principally that, "There should be an integrated contingency plan about more than just HIPAA..." A proactive, holistic, best-practices approach is strongly advocated by all of the healthcare leaders surveyed.
